Californian Redwood Forest
Did you know there is a gorgeous redwood forest tucked away near Apollo Bay? We didn't until a couple of days ago so had to go and see it immediately!
This place is fairytale magic. It reminds me of the Jeannie Baker book 'Where the Forest Meets the Sea', a favourite of mine.
The forest has a creek running through the trees, which are about 60m tall and still growing, and the otways rainforest is creeping in at the edges. It is a peaceful spot, well off the tourist trail, and makes for a lovely walk. The forest floor might prove a bit much for most prams so bundle up the little ones and tackle it on foot.
There are picnic tables at the edge of the forest and a car park close by. No toilets or bins so take everything with you.
To get to the forest drive through Apollo Bay along the great ocean road and turn right onto Binns Rd towards Beech Forest. It is an unsealed road with some beautiful views along the way. There are no signs for it along the way but there is a sign at the Forest. It is 350m from Hopetoun Falls which is another great stop.
