David Hockney is a prolific English artist with upcoming shows at the MET, The TATE and The Pompidou Centre. Luckily the NGV also has an exhibition of his works so we don't even need to leave town!
Current looks at the last ten years of Hockney's ongoing career and celebrates technology as well as traditional painted works. Hockney uses iPads and iPhones to regularly sketch and draw with hundreds of these images on display in both printed and digital form. He has also allowed the NGV to run some of these images in video mode so you can witness exactly how they were created.
I took Ravi along for a kids perspective and he certainly enjoyed the video works and was kept interested by the diverse artworks on display. Taking a handheld device with a drawing app would be a great way to see this exhibition with kids, they could walk around drawing with the artist! Hockney said he uses the 'Brushes' app but there are many available.
David Hockney: Current is showing now at NGV International on St Kilda Road. Tickets available online or at the door. Open daily 10am-5pm with special Friday Night performances on selected dates.
