The spectacular Australian Islamic Centre is currently under construction in Newport, in Melbourne's West, but is now open and welcoming visitors of all faiths.
The Centre has been designed by architect Glenn Murcutt in collaboration with local architect Hakan Elevi. Exposed concrete, bluestone pavers, extensive glass elements and gold lanterns covering the roof come together in a truly unique structure. It has been entirely funded by the local community. For more detail on Glenn Murcutt and his work on this project check out the documentary 'Spirit of Place'.
While the complex is still under construction the main prayer hall is near completion and is open for worship and for tours. Tours will be held on the last Saturday of each month.
The Australian Islamic Centre is located on Blenheim Road, Newport. Parking available on site. Fully accessible building. Visitors are required to remove their footwear before entering and women will need to cover their heads with a scarf.
