Kayaking the Yarra
Melbourne Kayaing is one of those hidden gems in Melbourne. We jumped in a kayak down at Docklands to give it a go and had a great night! There are several different tours to choose from, all fully escorted by experienced guides, but we went with the sunset tour which starts at Docklands and winds through the city to Birrarung Marr.
You start the trip with a little paddling and steering practice in the shadow of Etihad Stadium and once you have your moves down it's time to paddle over to get some fish and chips (greek salad and chips for the vegetarians) all served up to you in the kayak!
Next you get to head over to the Bolte Bridge for sunset before making your way down the river right into the heart of the city. There is so much to see along the way and the city will be lighting up before your eyes. The Crown fireballs will be set off just in time for you to have the perfect view and then it's just a short paddle down to the boatsheds opposite Birrarung Marr where the trip ends.
The kayaks are very stable and remarkably easy to get the hang of, we came to this adventure with no experience at all and had no worries keeping up (and keeping away from all those yachts).
We went without kids but kids are welcome on the tours. Be aware that the accompanying adult will probably need to do all the paddling and steering. You would also only want to do this with a child that is very willing to STAY in the boat. I think kids would really enjoy this experience and am planning on coming back with Mini (7yrs).
Photography is permitted, there is a splash proof zipped pocket in the front of the provided life vest perfect for a smart phone or compact camera. I wouldn't recommend bringing along a DSLR as, while a complete dunking is unlikely, splashes from paddling are common and not great for the gear.
Tours run year round but will be cancelled for bad weather. The Sunset Tour departs from the community hub beside library at the dock in Docklands. Times vary on time of year. For more information or to book visit Kayak Melbourne.
