The Soup Place- My top pick for lunch in the city.
There are so many reasons The Soup Place is the best place to grab lunch in the city. Let's start with the fact that the food is great, we had pumpkin and vege and lentil soup but there are plenty of choices of soups, salads, sandwiches and muffins. Next we'll point out that it is in the most Melbourne of locations, tucked away in busy Centre Place laneway, a short walk from Flinders St Station, but the main thing that got our attention was their fabulous pass-it-along soup idea (details below). So many people are getting behind this idea that when we visited this cozy little place their wall was completely covered in post it notes, each note a pre paid bowl of soup for one of Melbourne's homeless.
Make sure you check out The Soup Place next time you're in the city. They are located at 14 Centre Place, right in the heart of the city.
"This is the story of a little soup shop in Melbourne that makes a lot of lives better every day and in every season. But you’ve probably never heard of it… In Centre Place, about half way down, you will come across “The Soup Place”.
Out the front you’ll see the big black kettles full of tasty soup. You will also see lots of post-it notes and that’s where the story really starts. George, the owner of the concept saw a pizza place in New York that allowed patrons to buy slices for the homeless. They would write then their name and a little message on the note and then homeless people could come in and have a slice for free. George decided to bring this idea to Melbourne and now OVER 6,000 bowls of soup have been served to the less fortunate.
People pay $3.50 for a bowl of soup that usually costs $7.50. They write on a post-it note, sometimes it’s just their name, other times it’s words of kindness like “Be safe tonight, you are important”. Everyday those that can’t afford a meal come and get a bowl of soup and some bread and when they do a post-it note goes from the fridge to the bowls on top of the fridge to show how many people have been fed. Brilliant and we urge more people to get involve and support this passion and extremely generous concept."
